Dr Inderjit Singh Dhaliwal, Chairman NTUitive, Nanyang Technological University, Entrepreneur and Former Member of Parliament
Dr. Inderjit Singh Dhaliwal is a rare combination of experiences, as an engineer, senior management of a large multi-national company, a serial entrepreneur, an angel investor, and educator, a community leader and a Policy Maker. He is also an active global advocate of entrepreneurship and currently a Professor teaching Entrepreneurship at the Nanyang Technological University.
Dr. Inderjit served as a Member of Parliament in Singapore from 1996-2015 as a key member of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's constituency team in Ang Mo Kio GRC, during his 4 terms as an MP. As a politician, Inderjit served in various capacities, including as Deputy Government Whip and as Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for the Ministries of Finance and Trade & Industry. In Singapore, as the Deputy-Chairman of the Action Community for Entrepreneurship (ACE) for several years, and as a Member of Parliament, he actively drove the transformation of the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Singapore and helped shape many policies to better support start-ups, small and medium businesses in Singapore.
Inderjit started his career as Engineer with Texas Instruments (TI) where he spent the next 13 years ascending the corporate chain before becoming the youngest senior management team member, as the Director of Operations of the Singapore plant from 1996 to 1998. Under Inderjit’s leadership, Texas Instruments Singapore achieved its historical record performance in production output and quality levels of the company’s 30-year history in Singapore.
Inderjit began his entrepreneurial journey at the age of 37, after leaving TI in 1998, where he started and ran several businesses. He is the founder and first CEO and President United Test and Assembly Center (UTAC), a technology-based global semiconductor firm. UTAC became a Unicorn, valued at US$2b in 2001 and was listed on the Singapore stock exchange in 2004 and was valued at several billions of dollars and is today the 6th largest Outsource Semiconductor Assembly and Test Company (OSAT) in the world.
In 1997, Inderjit also co-founded Tri Star Electronics, together with his brothers, today a large MNCs and one of the biggest distributors of consumer electronic products in Africa. He is now the CEO of Solstar, a Singapore based consumer electronic brand which is growing rapidly in Africa. Inderjit is also active in building, investing and mentoring start-ups and has played a direct role in several of them. Over 15 years he has started, invested in, and mentored more than 20 start-ups and companies.
Inderjit currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Nanyang Technological University, and he is the Chairman of the board of NTUitive, the innovation company of NTU, focusing on entrepreneurship education, technology transfer, commercialization of technology and incubation of start-ups and spin-offs. Inderjit is also the Chairman of the Alumni and Development Committee (ADC) of NTU, where he oversees the universities strategies for Alumni engagement and development and fund-raising efforts for the University’s Endowment Fund.
Inderjit is currently an Adjunct Full Professor, teaching Entrepreneurship at NTU. Inderjit graduated from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) with a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Hons). He also holds an MBA from Strathclyde University. Inderjit was awarded and Honorary Doctorate by Amity University, India in 2018.
He is the author of the popular book, “The Art and Science of Entrepreneurship”, which captures his entrepreneurial experiences. Inderjit is also an inventor with 3 patents to his name.
